FLORENCE + THE MACHINE

photo: Stephen T. Lobosco

Florence + The Machine showed up on my radar about a year ago after I stumbled upon her myspace page. At the time there were only about three tracks up there, all live recordings and a minute and a half demo of “Dog Days” which cut off just as the full band joined in. But it was enough of a glimpse to know that this girl was seriously awesome. She’s got a voice that could blow down a brick house with three little piggies inside and the stage presence to match it. Her lyrics convey a person full of fire. They illustrate a beautiful balance between striving for freedom and the realization that it only comes from the will to fall. Lungs is one of the best albums I’ve heard of 2009. There’s not a a bad track on it. It will fill you with movement. Florence delivers the goods.

HOLLY MIRANDA

Yeahhh it’s been 5 months since I’ve posted here. 5 months of lost music. So I’ll get back into this whole thing with some favourites from the past that I haven’t blogged about until now. Better late than never!

If you don’t know Holly Miranda yet I suggest you get your ass in gear and go listen to her Sleep On Fire EP.  She just recently signed with XL and released a new single “Forest Green Oh Forest Green” (Listen below). Her forthcoming 10-track album, The Magician’s Private Library was produced by Dave Sitek at Staygold Studio in Brooklyn, NY, and includes contributions from Sitek, Kyp Malone and Jaleel Bunton (TV On The Radio), Eric Biondo and Stuart Bogie (Antibalas), and Holly’s long-time violinist, Marques Toliver. It’s set for a February 23, 2010 release.

SESSIONS AT SANTA’S

This week’s SESSIONS presented by SPENCER SWEENEY and STEREOGUM is tonight and what a better way to look forward to it than to gaze back at the illuminated, fun-filled mess of a party that happened last week! Quite possibly the best and weirdest Tuesday night on the planet, SESSIONS is a trash bag littered habitat that would make Oscar the Grouch swoon. The amazing DANIEL HIGGS and NATHAN BELL performed separate sets while ANDREW WK looked on through a hole he ripped in one of the draping garbage bags.

Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers hits the ground running, taking Shilpa’s voice and songs to new heights: grinding blues, sleazy jazz, and disturbing rock tied together with pop and punk sensibilities; the result sounding something like a vulgar Ella Fitzgerald crooning in front of a wall of distortion and thunderous, pounding rhythms. The band reads like a who’s who of recent NYC rock luminaries including members of Creaky Boards, Soft Black, Kapow!, and cult rock producers The Negatones. Their live shows are already a notorious commodity.

Joanna Erdos is known for performing a kind of musical slight of hand by singing stories of epic heartbreak while fooling her listeners into believing that they are having a good time. The heroines in her songs are far crazier than Amy Winehouse and Syd Barett, but they always have more fun on their way down. It’s the combination of Joanna’s sweaty-sweet alto and her magnificent original music – made up of heart-felt piano-rock songs that sound like Honky Dory era Bowie dancing cheek to cheek with Nick Cave in the bowels of a pirate ship – that provide the melodic hooks and lush vocal harmonies which keep admiring crowds singing along.

Blood and Fun!

MORE PHOTOS HERE.

Friday night was mayhem and full of blood and fun! Myself and BAMBI KILLERS threw a little “Friday The 13th” show at LIT and it was insane! The basement was packed. CLAW opened with a dirty set of slam dance induced punk and Bambi Killers headlined the show with their hallucinatory, jaw-dropping theatrics and 2012. The Crowd had no idea what hit them.

Catch Bambi Killers at The Delancey this month and lookout for a residency at Lit in the spring!

Hell Freezes Over

blink 182

Wow.  It’s the best word that I could come up with when I was watching the Grammy Awards last week and witnessed some old friends reuniting.  Ladies and gentleman, if you have not yet heard, the stars have aligned and BLINK 182 are giving it another go.

I now know what it felt like when my parents were excited that THE EAGLES were getting back together.  I now understand the hysteria behind THE POLICE reunion.  (Note:  In no way am I comparing the talents of the Eagles and the Police to blink 182, let’s not get silly.)  At certain points in each of their careers, it was thought that they were done.  Finished.  Never to be heard from again.  Sure, some reunions are for money.  Some are for fame.  At this point, I don’t even care.  I am just excited for another chance.

It was (and I cannot believe this) ten years ago that I was introduced to Mark, Tom, and Travis.  I, like every other 15 year old, was going through the phase where I was trying to identify with other people.  I had no cares in the world, I just wanted to have fun.  I was trying to figure out who I was, and at the time I related best with thousands of other kids in the middle of a mosh pit in the heat of the Ohio summer.

I am not the same person I was ten years ago.  I have grown up.  I have new friends, a new zip code, and new responsibilities.  The good part is:  so have they.  Mark, Tom, and Travis are different people than they were ten years ago.  They are married and have families.  They have grown up.

So what should we expect from all of this?  After all, the guys parted on not such good terms.  Will it last?  Will egos get in the way?  Can they recapture the chemistry that they once had?  I am going to be realistic – I’m not expecting a repeat of their early days.   I am not expecting perfection.  I want to reminisce.  I want to channel my inner-teenager again.  I just want to have fun.  When it comes down to it, they are just three friends doing what they love.  And after all, isn’t that what is all about?

A little nostalgia for your ears…
