Shilpa Ray at Santos Party House
+++ GET YOUR TICKETS HERE +++
Mere months after the demise of her former project, the critically acclaimed Beat The Devil, SHILPA RAY AND HER HAPPY HOOKERS is already stirring a raucous with her new band and she’s bringing it to SANTOS PARTY HOUSE….again! This time JOANNA ERDOS AND THE MIDNIGHT SHOW will be supporting and both bands will perform covers from the original Woodstock. The show will be filmed for a VH-1 documentary on the 40th anniversary of Woodstock. You DO NOT want to miss this show!
Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers hits the ground running, taking Shilpa’s voice and songs to new heights: grinding blues, sleazy jazz, and disturbing rock tied together with pop and punk sensibilities; the result sounding something like a vulgar Ella Fitzgerald crooning in front of a wall of distortion and thunderous, pounding rhythms. The band reads like a who’s who of recent NYC rock luminaries including members of Creaky Boards, Soft Black, Kapow!, and cult rock producers The Negatones. Their live shows are already a notorious commodity.
Joanna Erdos is known for performing a kind of musical slight of hand by singing stories of epic heartbreak while fooling her listeners into believing that they are having a good time. The heroines in her songs are far crazier than Amy Winehouse and Syd Barett, but they always have more fun on their way down. It’s the combination of Joanna’s sweaty-sweet alto and her magnificent original music – made up of heart-felt piano-rock songs that sound like Honky Dory era Bowie dancing cheek to cheek with Nick Cave in the bowels of a pirate ship – that provide the melodic hooks and lush vocal harmonies which keep admiring crowds singing along.
Blood and Fun!
Friday night was mayhem and full of blood and fun! Myself and BAMBI KILLERS threw a little “Friday The 13th” show at LIT and it was insane! The basement was packed. CLAW opened with a dirty set of slam dance induced punk and Bambi Killers headlined the show with their hallucinatory, jaw-dropping theatrics and 2012. The Crowd had no idea what hit them.
Catch Bambi Killers at The Delancey this month and lookout for a residency at Lit in the spring!

They Can Breathe Again
My awesome friends [and family!] in PATENT PENDING haven’t legally been able to make music for 2 years! That’s insane. But now they can and they are celebrating by releasing a very special cover of “Every Time We Touch.” Go to their MYSPACE page to hear it!
Their new album comes out this summer!

Hell Freezes Over

Wow. It’s the best word that I could come up with when I was watching the Grammy Awards last week and witnessed some old friends reuniting. Ladies and gentleman, if you have not yet heard, the stars have aligned and BLINK 182 are giving it another go.
I now know what it felt like when my parents were excited that THE EAGLES were getting back together. I now understand the hysteria behind THE POLICE reunion. (Note: In no way am I comparing the talents of the Eagles and the Police to blink 182, let’s not get silly.) At certain points in each of their careers, it was thought that they were done. Finished. Never to be heard from again. Sure, some reunions are for money. Some are for fame. At this point, I don’t even care. I am just excited for another chance.
It was (and I cannot believe this) ten years ago that I was introduced to Mark, Tom, and Travis. I, like every other 15 year old, was going through the phase where I was trying to identify with other people. I had no cares in the world, I just wanted to have fun. I was trying to figure out who I was, and at the time I related best with thousands of other kids in the middle of a mosh pit in the heat of the Ohio summer.
I am not the same person I was ten years ago. I have grown up. I have new friends, a new zip code, and new responsibilities. The good part is: so have they. Mark, Tom, and Travis are different people than they were ten years ago. They are married and have families. They have grown up.
So what should we expect from all of this? After all, the guys parted on not such good terms. Will it last? Will egos get in the way? Can they recapture the chemistry that they once had? I am going to be realistic – I’m not expecting a repeat of their early days. I am not expecting perfection. I want to reminisce. I want to channel my inner-teenager again. I just want to have fun. When it comes down to it, they are just three friends doing what they love. And after all, isn’t that what is all about?
A little nostalgia for your ears…

Catch Up and Updates!
It’s update time! The past week has been a little bit of madness and writing at 4/5am didn’t seem like a good idea. I’m afraid my posts would have been as difficult for me to write as they would have been for you to read them, so you can thank me now for sleeping instead!
Lots to catch up on!
First, the Punk Rock Pillow Fight VII pictures from the previous post will be back up shortly. Had a bit of an issue with how they looked on Flickr and am going to re-upload them when I get a chance.
Just a taste of what’s to come. I shot a bunch of shows last week and will have posts and photos up very soon from SHAKER PEGS at PARKSIDE LOUNGE as well as LISSY TRULLIE’s ep release show at MERCURY LOUNGE with FRANKPOLLIS and LINFINITY. Also posting soon will be the FRIDAY THE 13TH show I threw at LIT with the lovely BAMBI KILLERS and CLAW [which would not have happened without Michelle!].
Stay Tuned!

Go To The Mattresses!
The feathers flew Monday night at SANTOS PARTY HOUSE during the 7th installment of the famed PUNK ROCK PILLOW FIGHT as competitors battled for championship titles! Ok, there were no feathers but there were some serious beat downs. Embarrassing beat downs. Some struggled to stay standing. Some looked as though they were going to pass out.
Bringing things to another level were fight songs and sound effects provided by DJ BLUE STEEL LAMBORGHINI and amazing sets from Brooklyn-based band RED BEARD and the 4 girl one drummer boy Icelandic group VICKY [stay tuned for a posting on their new release "Pull Hard."]

Party Hard
It was mayhem at SANTOS PARTYHOUSE on Friday night and I’m about to explain why using only two words. Well, 2 words and initials. 2 1/2 words? Whatever . . . The first word is FREE. Yeah, I know, already amazing. And the second word/initial is ANDREW W.K.! . . . Pick yourself up off the floor, you can’t see the pictures or video from there! Ok, get it together. What follows is my firsthand account of all the awesomeness that was brought to Santos by ADULT SWIM. Oh and CHEESEBURGER played as well. I nearly drowned in beer during their set.
If they’re not already nominated I’d like to submit Andrew and Cherie for coolest couple on the planet. Look at them!
Fact: You can’t just invite one person onstage. Everyone else gets super jealous.
My lovely friend Noel [who brought me handwarmers while I was working the door!] shot this crazy video of “Party Hard” from the crowd … check it out!

The Hundred In The Hands
They are like candy. Or maybe water. They are THE HUNDRED IN THE HANDS and their debut single Dressed In Dresden/Undressed In Dresden came out last week and is available for download. I’ve had it on repeat…for about…a week. It’s so addictive. Go see them live and be prepared to move because they don’t like it when you stand still and stare…It’s boring. Will hopefully get them at Lit soon so check back.
